7 ways coaching has changed my life, and how it can change yours!

Coaching can have a transformational and profound effect on your life. To demonstrate how it can change your life, I have shared a list of 7 ways that coaching has changed my life.  

Over the last decade I have had many coaches for different things. These coaches have helped me define what success looks like to me and how to achieve it, which means that I can prioritise all of my time and energy on the things that matter most to me. It's made me more honest with myself and more able to admit when things aren't going the way I want them too. Most importantly, having someone who believes in me (and isn't afraid to tell me when I'm being an idiot) makes it easier for me to believe in myself too. Here are 7 ways coaching has changed my life:


1) I have a person to talk to about my goals

One of the most important aspects of coaching is having a person to talk to about your goals. Having a sounding board that will listen and support you in achieving them is key. Someone who challenges you and holds you accountable when things get tough is also important.


2) I'm more honest with myself

Coaching has helped me become more honest with myself about my goals and what I want in life. When you're working with a coach, they have the ability to challenge you in ways that other people don't. They'll ask questions like: "What are your real goals?" or "Will this choice make you happy?" If you don't answer honestly, then your coach will keep asking until they get the truth out of you! It's freeing to be able to admit the things that are holding me back from achieving my goals.


3) It's helped me define success for myself

A truly successful life is one in which you define your own success. You don't get there by comparing yourself to others, and you certainly can't rely on the opinions of others when it comes to how you want your life to look. Everyone has their own definition of what they want out of life, so while it's important to have goals and dreams and aspirations, they are only as valuable as the meaning we give them.

Success is a journey—it's not a destination that you arrive at once and for all time. It's something that changes over time as we grow older or move through different stages of our lives (i.e., marriage, having kids).


4) It's taught me to celebrate my successes

Number 4 of the 7 ways coaching has changed my life is that it has helped me celebrate my successes. I don't mean the big ones, though I've had some of those too, I mean the small victories. The ones that sometimes get thrown into the background of our busy lives. The ones you may not even realize have happened until someone asks how your day was going and you start listing off all these tiny wins or accomplishments. 

I used to be really bad at this! But now when something good happens for me—big or small—I'm more inclined to celebrate what's working rather than focusing on what isn't yet.


5) Having a coach helps me prioritise my time and energy resulting in greater productivity

One of the biggest benefits of having a coach is that it helps you prioritise your time and energy.

If you're like me, you often find yourself pulled in different directions with multiple priorities competing for your attention. Having someone guide me through this process has made it much easier to set goals, plan my day and make sure I'm getting the most out of my day.

My coach doesn't get mad at me if I don't meet my goals. Instead, they help me find out what the obstacle is.

But as I learned from my own experience with coaching and from talking with other people who have worked with coaches, this is exactly what makes coaching effective: the coach isn't there to judge or give advice—they're just there for support. Their job isn't about making sure that you achieve every goal on the list; it's about helping identify where the obstacles are in your path so that together, we can find ways around them (or over them).

When you have someone who believes in you and helps you be accountable, it can change your life


6) Accountability

Coaching has helped me become more accountable. Not only do I have someone to call me out when I'm not doing the things I committed to, but they also hold me accountable for my actions and how those actions impact others.

7) My coaches have helped me earn more £ 💰

Coaching is often mixed with mentoring, so your coach will give you advice. I do this with clients helping them either negotiate a pay rise or negotiate their starting salary higher. This often is increasing confidence to ask for your worth, and it is one way coaching has changed my life but it is also one way I help clients change theirs. The potential to lose thousands during a salary negotiation is ridiculous. 

The biggest takeaway from coaching for me is having someone who believes in you. Helps keep you accountable and celebrates your successes can change your life. Having a coach has helped me define success for myself; prioritize my time and energy, celebrate my successes and find out the obstacle when I don't meet my goals. So, these are the 7 ways coaching has changed my life.
